“She just entered into the restaurant with him”, Mike said, speaking
into the phone’s speaker. “She looked happy also. Like always”
“Are you sure of what you’re seeing and saying?”, asked a doubtful James who was at the other end of the phone.
“Well, I’m the one using the binoculars here, and I know your girl so well. I can’t be possibly wrong”
James gave an audible sigh at the other end of the phone. He was obviously devastated. It took him some time to gather his thoughts around and reply Mike.
“Give me the name of the restaurant”, he finally quipped.
“Its Hextophar’s Cafe”, replied Mike, adjusting the lens on his binoculars,”and you better come early. You don’t want to miss any of this good stuff”.
The dial tone sounded and Mike flipped back his phone and returned it
to his back pocket. He had been following Julie for three days
after seeing her with a strange man the same number of days ago. He
and James had their friendship dating back as far as their university
years and seeing his best friend’s girl cheat on him was not something he would turn a side-eye to. Since he was a trained detective, he took it upon himself to trail her, free-of-charge of course, keeping James in the know about all that happens and transpired between her and the ‘new man’.
James, who loved his girl so much that he didn’t believe at first was left to marvel when Mike sent him a picture of her hugging her mystery man tightly while clutching some bags of wares bought from a supermarket. He was also sorry for James. It was like all the years he had put into the relationship was vanishing. Gone, just like that.
Mike heard a soft rap on the side glass of his car door and turned his gaze away from the binoculars. It was James, as expected, he unlocked the car from the central lock system and James entered, perching himself on the passenger seat beside the driver’s himself.
“Man, that was fast. Did you fly?”, asked Mike, sarcastically.
“Yeah, fool. ‘cos I’m James Kal-el”, replied a furious James.
“Slow down man. Its not me cheating on you here. I should be thanked for seeing her”
“No dude. I’d have appreciated not telling me at all. Now I can’t even sleep well at night”
“The things we do for love”
“Yeah. A playboy like you would never understand”
Mike burst into a low laughter as he observed his friend getting all tensed up on a girl.
“And he laughs!”, exclaimed James, scornfully
“And here I was, thinking you were true to your words that you’d never enslave your heart in a cage of any girl’s”
“Well, Amanda’s not just any girl”
“Oh? What’s she then? Wonder Woman? That’s what you all say after biting the forbidden fruit”.
Mike burst into another bout of laughter at his own ill-constructed joke.
James yanked the binoculars from Mike whose eyes were already getting teary from the continuous laughter and peered into them himself.
“Oh My God. See how she’s laughing with him. She looks so happy. Why did she have to do this?”
“Well, he’s richer than you. I understand her plight”.
James threw Mike a look of scorn as he continued looking into the device.
“She’s removing something from his hair. She’s only allowed to do that to me. No other man. I just can’t believe this.”
“Well then, your name should be changed to Thomas”
“I’ve done all I could as a boyfriend. Taken her on romantic dates and all”, continued James, ignoring the jests of his friend.
“Obviously, you’ve never taken her on an expensive date as this”
“She was just even telling me recently that she would like me to meet someone. I thought that meant I was so special to her. Thought she was talking about family.”
“Aww. Cry baby like you. She obviously wanted to introduce you to her REAL boyfriend”.
With a wave of the back-hand which landed across the face of Mike,
James shut him up and started observing the couple in the restaurant more. The slap had little effect on Mike as he was already reeling with fresh laughter in less than thirty seconds after the slap’s impact.
“They’re moving. Seems they’re leaving”, announced James, as if he had won a medal. “Now I can see the face of that girl-snatching, womanizing, good-for-nothing..” He paused “…rich bastard”
Amanda and the man stepped out the restaurant and James observed him more. He was tall, a little less taller than he was and he had a great head of hair. He was dressed nicely too and there was no doubt that he
was either born with a silver spoon, or chewed whatever spoon he was born with till it became silver. As soon as they stepped outside and walked a few distance, they both came to stop at a car just two cars away from James’ location. She turned and gave the guy a full-frontal
hug. This infuriated James so much that he dropped the viewing device, flung the door open and barged out of the car. Mike wanted to stop him, he was just too late. A part of him wanted to see how well his friend could handle the situation too.
With long, giant strides, James reached the next car. Mike was already in pursuit noting to give a considerable distance for the angry man to make his first action. Before Mike could do anything, James pulled the man away from Amanda and planted a big-fisted punch in his face. The punch caught the man so hard, he fell. Just then, Mike arrived.
Amanda had already knelt beside the man and was tendering to his sore face when she looked up at James, with a look of disgust in her eyes.
“What in the devil’s realm did you just do, James?”, inquired Amanda, who was shocked to see James here and with infuriation not masked in her tone at all.
“How dare you talk to me like that? You’re the one cheating, not me. I love you, Amanda!”
Amanda helped the man to his feet. His face was already swollen from the massive punch he just took. With a shaky outstretched hand towards James, he spoke.
“Hi James, I’ve heard a lot about you”, he stopped to rub a part of his face with his free hand. “I’m Dave, Amanda’s brother. It was nice meeting you too”
James had no idea what to do. Like a programmed doll, he took the hand.
Dave drew him closer with the one hand and launched a retaliation at James, which caught him well too.
“Welcome to the family, James”, Dave announced.
Mike, who had been watching on all along couldn’t contain himself again as he burst into another one of his laughters. Amanda had the expression of hurt in her eyes, but somewhere within her, she knew she had a man who would fight for her.
