Year : 2807
Day : 15
Dr. Charles Evon, head of Space Communications and Research Technology Department as NASA, walked into the West Wing of the White House with a briefcase in hand. He strode briskly to the desk of the secretary serving the President himself, stated his name and mission and was asked to wait. He was really impatient and needed to see the President as fast as he could. At this point, delay was dangerous, not only for him, but for the whole of Earth.
He had waited barely thirty minutes when the President concluded his meeting with the Joint Chiefs and the secretary announced his presence to the President, who asked him in. The secretary nodded for him to go in with a smile on her face. He stood up, gathered his coat around him, took his briefcase and walked into the Oval Office. He thought about the smile on her face. If only she knew what was happening. If only.
“Welcome, Dr. Evon”, greeted Michael Jeremiah, the President’s Chief of Staff, extending a hand.
“Please, call me Charles”, replied the doctor as he smiled and shook the extended hand firmly.
The President rose in his seat too and offered his hand which was taken whilst he said Mr President in respect.
The President opened the floor for conversation.
“Charles, I got a message not long ago that you wished to see me, and that it was urgent. You could have faxed me or mailed my secretary instead of coming all the way here”
“Yes, Mr. President, that is true”, Charles began, “but the weight of this matter is such that can’t be conveyed unless by a conversation as this”
“And what is that, Charles?” Asked Jerry
Dr. Evon sat in one of the couches adjacent the President and began.
“Last week, sir, we recorded some activity around earth”
“Activity?” Inquired the president
“Yes sir. Some activity. It was recorded in our initial logs as a warming of some earth’s part, due to an influx in the original combustion level of gases in the sun, causing a rapidly higher temperature than recorded in the equatorial region”
“And how is that of interest to us?” Asked the President
“Well, sir, we were wrong. The satellite feed we pulled this morning contradicts our initial inferences. It was something else that caused the change in temperature over the equator sir”
“Charles, we’re still in the dark here. Tell us more, would you?”, inquired the already impatient chief of staff
Dr. Evon sighed as if unable to find an easier way to break the news, braced himself and continued.
“A unilaterally concentrated ray was targeted at the earth sometimes last week. It was so strong that it could travel through the fragile space continuum and survive the light years it travelled through. This made us believe that it came from a strong source, something stronger than what we’ve even been able to achieve here, sir. The ray got so close to earth but somehow, luckily, a floating meteor got in its way and saved some parts of the equator from that ray. On impact, the meteor shattered into lots of parts and lost its orbital characteristics. Sir, had the ray hit earth, that part would be wiped off the planet. It was so strong that my calculations have predicted that with its speed and power, it would have easily pierced through our atmosphere and ozone layer”
The President looked startled. He didn’t understand most of the scientific terms, but he got the underlying message.
“So you mean to tell me that the earth was attacked?”, the president asked the doctor
“Yes, sir. That’s what I’m saying”
“And by ‘people’ living in space?” . The president pronounced the ‘people’ with sarcasm.
“Again, yes sir”
At this point, Jerry cut in.
“Don’t be ridiculous, Charles. You are a man of science. You shouldn’t believe these things”
“Yes, I shouldn’t”, confirmed the doctor, “I didn’t even believe at first, till our space probe pulled a transmission that was sent through space to all receiving satellites connecting to earth”
At this point, Dr. Evon took his suitcase and placed it on the table before him, with the President and Jerry watching keenly. He entered an unlocking code, had his retina scanned and the suitcase popped open. It was no ordinary suitcase, it was a standard NASA issue. There were knobs and keys and buttons everywhere, with a small screen in front. This was one of the inventions of the 29th Century, year 2807. He entered some commands into the Satellite Retrieval System and the screen came to life, showing static. He turned on the volume and a squeaky voice started to say something. It lasted for about three minutes.
“What was that?”, asked Jerry
“Hear for yourselves”, replied Charles.
He activated a translator on the SRS and the message came across to the room.
“Earthlings… We have come… Take over your planet… Advised to surrender easily… You stand no chance against us… We will board your planet… We will habitate in your planet… And you will hand it over to us… You are advised… To self destroy yourselves… If we meet resistance… You stand no chance… You shall all be wiped out… You have been warned”
With that, the message ended.
Jerry sank lower into his chair. Sweat started gathering on the forehead of the President too. He summoned up the little courage left in him and spoke.
“What does this mean, Charles?”
“We are at war, Mr. President”, he began, “Not with men, but with aliens. This is the biggest threat to mankind. We face the danger of extinction. The aliens have fired their first shot, and I can tell you, with what that meteor suffered, we stand no chance against the advanced technology these aliens have, Mr. President”
The President ran his hand through his hair. That was what he would normally do when confused. Right now, confused does not even begin to define him.
