*Narrator enters* *Looks around*

‘A real man is known in the time of his tribulations’ — According to this, I think I’m partially a real man. Dont wonder much why I said that, trust me to always share the experience.

I was fortunate to live alone in a mortgaged house of mine at an early age of 22. Well,I got my job then. I owned three Alsatian dogs as pets and was pretty sure my security was tight with them. However, terror struck one night.
As the normal routine, I watched TV till around 10 in the evening, took a quick shower, called my ‘African Queen’ ,wished her a goodnight and was about retiring to bed when I heard the dogs barking. I thought to myself, ”dogs would never stop being dogs” and tried to rest myself but, the barkings intensified. I thought the dogs werent satisfied with their dinner (as always), and in anger, left my room and headed out, ready to give the dogs a taste of my anger. On my way, I grabbed a blanket and draped it over my naked self, opened the front door and to my suprise, saw that the dogs were actually barking off something.
I couldnt see what or whom they were barking at as my halogen lamps did not illuminate the area well. Curiosity, which kills the cat, got the best of me. As I moved closer, I saw a whip-like thingie hit the first dog and it lay limp on the ground, instantly. I was transfixed.
Just like the first, another lash came out, and in like an-hundredth-of-a-second, the second dog went down too. Seeing that his troops were down, the third went for cover, leaving me at the mercy of whatever they were barking at, and oh, I was at a very reasonable distance away from my ‘homezone’ by this time, and fear wouldnt even let me move.
As I stood there, transfixed, beads of sweat gathering on my head, pupils dilating, fists clenching, heart racing so fast I could hear it and adrenalin pumping, before my very own eyes, I saw the creature uncoiling until it stretched to its full length before me — As a biology boy, that was the closest I had ever been to a giant, living reptilia. It was as if my worst nightmares had finally come true.
We stood there looking at each other, as if anticipating the moves we’d both take. The creature fixed its eyes on me, wagged its tail portion and started zigzagging towards me. A surge of hot blood pumped through me and I took to my heels instantly with the creature behind me. Little did I know that I was being trailed.
Fear made me forget the actual doorpost and I fled for the uncompleted boys quarters behind my main apartment. I thought I could find solace there, not knowing my woes had just begun. Having a more powered brain than the animal, plus the fear in me gave me an egde. I took a good hiding position long before it came in and also grabbed a rod for security. Not long after, it strode in majestically, looking for its ‘prey’. I shifted almost noiselessly till I got a good vantage position, or so I thought, and hit my rod against it feebly. It didnt make a dent in its armour, it rather fuelled its anger.
As I made to escape, the Power Holding Company thwarted my efforts by taking out the power. Everywhere was silent, so silent I could hear it slithering towards me, spitting venom all the way. I could literally smell my own fear.
It was yards away when it threw itself at me with full power.
The pain seared through me so much that I woke up in reality with a shout in my mouth — I had been dreaming. Beads of sweat had gathered on my forehead and was dropping onto my laps. I was glad it was a dream.
After calming down, about twenty minutes later, I prepared to sleep again when in reality, my three dogs started barking, in the middle of the night, the same way they did in the nightmare…
